Posted by Thomas Baker in World Series of Poker on July 29, 2006

LAS VEGAS–This World Series began with Mike Sexton winning the Tournament of Champions and $1 million, half of which he promised to give to charity. As the main event got under way, Mike Sexton made the mile-long trek from the Rio poker room to the Voodoo Lounge during dinner break to formally present five different checks for $100,000 each — to the Buoniconti Fund, Children Incorporated, the Wounded Warriors Project, Special Olympics, and the Paralyzed Veterans of America.

MAIN EVENT UPDATE: Sexton finished Day 1A with a comfortable 42,500 chips.
