12:00pm

Day 4 is just about to get underway with 72 players remaining. Last night played later than expected so that they could all make it into the money.

PartyPoker has two players left in the field, or almost 3%. We are still above expectations! That’s the good news. The bad news is that both players are sitting below average in chips, so they have their work cut out for them.

12:30pm

One of our stars, and one of “the” stars, have both been eliminated.

Malte Roennig got so short he had to ship it in with anything, and he did. And doubled up! But then a few hands later, on the button, he got it all-in again with KQ, only to see his lone opponent show AK. No queen came and Malte finished a very respectable 71st place, good for just shy of $20,000.

On a different table, Daniel Negreanu pondered an all-in bet from Carlos Mortensen on the river. Daniel tried, as he usually does, to talk himself out of calling the bet. In the end he called and Carlos showed him a full house. Daniel was done much earlier then he wanted to be.

The tournament, which once had over 700 players, in a grand ballroom and overflow tent, is now down to this:

3:00pm

It’s the first break of the day, and with it a total of 18 players have exited the tournament. 54 players remain, and will play until 8:30pm tonight. Tournament Director Matt Savage hopes that they get down to 18 players, but isn’t confident.

In addition to Daniel Negreanu, other big names continue to fall. Eliminated so far today; Vanessa Rousso,, Hoyt Corkins and Robert Mizrachi.

Although the WPT LAPC Main Event is grinding on, there is another event that started yesterday here at the Commerce…the $25k high roller tournament. 41 of the top names in poker entered, and the tournament will restart today at with 23 players left.

4:00pm

Jeff Kimber, our last PartyPoker qualifier, has been eliminated in 54th place ($28,610). Jeff took his AQ up against AK for a big pot, then got the rest in awhile later with a smaller pair than his opponent.

Jeff was the last hope of all the qualifiers to win the tournament, and with it, and additional $1 million for the group to share.

7:00pm

31 players remain in the hunt for the $1.7m 1st prize here at the Commerce casino. None of them qualified through PartyPoker. It’s dissapointing to not have any still playing after our spectacular showing at the Aussie Millions in Melbourne, Australia. But our players gave it their all here in Los Angeles.

This is the first WPT event PartyPoker has qualified players to since the last WPT PartyPoker Million in 2006. With the recent acquisition of WPT by PartyGaming, expect to see lots more qualifiers at all WPT events around the world.

Here is a list of the 31 remaining players:

1:00pm

Bad news…

Salvatore Deluca, one of our Italian qualifiers, has apparently exited the tournament rather quickly. He was seated for hand one, and no more than a few minutes later was gone.

If you happened to pick up the chip counts from somewhere else, you might have seen Salvatore starting the day as the overwhelming chipleader with 431,000. That was incorrect, he actually started the day with a somewhat short stack of 43,100.

Good news…

Our chip leader for the day, Malte Moennig seems to be holding his own.

The rest…

Some of the big name players that started the day are Daniel Negreanu (2nd in chips), Jennifer Tilly, Howard Lederer, Johnny Chan and Carlos Mortensen.

12:00pm

It’s Time!

We have five players left in the tournament out of the 16 that started. 186 total are remaining, with 72 prepared to get paid at least $19,130. That means it’s time to play some poker!

Bruce Buffer has kicked off each day with his trademark scream. Bruce, if you arent aware, is the voice of the UFC, and brother of Michael Buffer, the famed boxing announcer who screams to a different tune…Let’s get ready to rumble!

Here’s hoping all five of our players make it into the money (step 1), and then into day 4 (8:30 pm)

Six of our PartyPoker.com qualifiers played in Day 1a, but only one survived to play day 2. That was Tony Keomany, who will take his $73,800 chip stack with him when he joins up those qualifiers who make it through days 1b and 1c.

Team Party bad boy Tony G made it to the final table of the $100k Challenge. Eight players, but only five got paid. nad that’s where Tony fell, in 5th place, which was good enough to collect his $100k buy-in back. After sending both Tom Durr and Howard Leaderer out of the tournament on his bike, giving them his catchphrase “On your bike!”, he finally had to ride out on his own after being eliminated by Dan Shak, the eventual winner of the tournament.

On Tony’s lasy hand, he raised to $70,00 under the gun with folded action to Dan who went all-in. Tony made the call with his pockets tens and was up against AK. The flop was anything but good to Tony coming down AK5. Turn J, which gave Tony a few more outs to a straight but the 3 on the river sealed Tony’s fate and off on his bike he went.

By placing 2nd in the $100k Challenge, Phil Ivey vaulted into the #1 spot for most money won in live tournaments.

We hade 23 PartyPoker.com qualifiers play on day 1b. Among those are PartyPoker.com’s sponsored pro, and last years main event winner, Stewart Scott, who played with his own mental coach Jamie Glazier to the left of him. It will be interesting to hear what advice Jamie gave his student.

Party Poker sponsored pro, and defending Aussie Millions champion Stewart Scott found his groove just in time for the main event by placing 5th in the $1,000 rebuy tournament, which attracted 108 players. For his efforts Stewart pocketed $37,000 AUD.

In Stewart’s own words “It was a tough field of players. I managed to tripple up early but slowly got grinded down to a medium and then a short stack for a large portion of the tournament. I was card dead and my table was just too good to get away with any fancy moves.

What turned things around was when I moved to a new table and the following hand was played out: The button standard raised my big blind and I flat called with A6. Flop comes out J99 and I check. Button bets $1k and I check-raised to $3.5k. Button calls.

On the turn comes a 2, that shouldn’t change anything and I checked again. Button bets $5k and I’m thinking of folding but trust my instincts and do another check-raise up to $10k. There’s now $18k in the pot and I only have $12k behind. The guy goes into the tank and I’m almost starts melting and screaming inside go away! Finally the guy folds and I can start breathing again. That hand turned things around and I could play in a more relaxed mood.”

Stewart continues “I played at the same table as cricket icon Shane Warne for more than 5 hours and I must admit I was impressed by his down to earth personality and poker skills. Shane managed to get to the final table which is quite an achievement considering the field was mainly consisting of pro players.”

It’s summer time in Australia, which was a shock to the system of those of us that flew in from the recently snow ravaged region of London! We are down under for the Main Event of the Aussie Millions, a tournament that continues to grow in popularity, especially for players from countries around the world. The event is held at Crown Casino, which is an amazing complex of hotels, shops, restaurants, entertainment and of course a casino!

43 PartyPoker.com players made the trip to Melbourne with us, flying in from 14 different countries. The group of players includes several of our Palladium VIP poker players, who earned their way into the tournament by grinding it out in our November Gladiator promotion.

The PartyGaming staff arrived early to get the players checked in on Friday. Players were given an amazing, retro line of PartyPoker.com clothing to wear. In other words, hats, t-shirts and polo shirts with the Party logo! Yes, we do things in style. The staff here done under include myself, Naomi and Lucinda (our very own Party Girls) and Justin and Henrik.

With the players all checked in on Friday, Saturday was a day to enjoy some of the culture and sport that Melbourne has to offer. I took a select group of our Palladium VIPs to play a round of golf at the Capital Golf Club. Capital is no ordinary golf course. One of our VIP’s told me he has been trying to get on the course for 10 years. You see, Capital is not a course you can walk on and pay to play, and there are no members. It is invite only. Being a Palladium VIP has it’s priveledges!

“High rollers from the Melbourne casino and the social and sporting elite including past Presidents of the United States, Prime Minister’s of Australia, State Premiers and contemporary golf icons like Tiger Woods, Greg Norman and Sergio Garcia have all enjoyed the tranquillity of the Capital fairways. Whilst sadly a course solely for the fortunate few, the Capital Golf Club is clearly one of Australia’s finest golf experiences.”

While we were on the golf course, Naomi and Lucinda hosted the rest of the players at a Summer BBQ reception at Breezes terraced restaurant. And since I wasn’t there, I left it to Lucinda to provide a recap of what went down:

The indoor/outdoor venue proved perfect for the qualifiers to enjoy blue skies and sunshine despite an earlier summer shower. As local online qualifier Wendy Boxal said, “You get four seasons in one day in Melbourne!” Luckily, the authentic PartyPoker.com akubra hats provided both sun and rain protection, and were very popular with all the players (although some went so far as to wear their baseball caps as well, which made for an interesting look…)

PartyPoker.com qualifiers and their branded akubra hats

The menu was prepared by an English Gordon Ramsey-trained chef, who treated the qualifiers and guests to a delicious starter of seafood platter followed by T-bone steak, marinated salmon, mixed grill, lamb skewers, grilled chicken and local seafood specialty, baby barramundi. For those who still had space, there was an assortment of ice-creams and sorbet to finish, although for one Italian qualifier Claudio Barbieri there was extra dessert in the form of a chocolate cake to celebrate his 41st birthday. Being serenaded ‘Happy Birthday’ by his fellow poker qualifiers is one birthday Claudio will probably remember (although hopefully the singing he’ll forget!)

The afternoon came to a close with speeches given by PartyPoker’s Henrick and last year’s Aussie Millions Champion, Stewart Scott. Stewart talked about how much it meant to him to win, how he’s looking forward to defending his current title, and finished by wishing everybody luck in coming “a well-deserved second place!”. Finally Stewart’s motivation coach shared some words of wisdom, encouraging the players to stay focussed on each hand in turn and not to allow themselves to become fazed by the overall event. All in all everybody had a great afternoon, and would definitely welcome another chance to throw another shrimp on the barbie!”

Although the Main Event doesn’t start until Sunday, Saturday saw some real high level action in the form of the Aussie Millions $100,000 Challenge. With a $100,000 buy-in, this is one of the biggest tournaments of the year. And that was reflected in the 24 players, a literal who’s who in the poker world, that coughed up $100,000 each.

As the tournament was set to commence, all of the players took their seats quietly. All of the players except one. Invoking the image of one Phil Hellmuth and his grand entrances, our very own Team Party player Tony G, no stranger to making a scene, came rolling into the tournament on his PartyPoker.com bicycle, with his personal concierge Jessie on his lap.

“…on yer bike”

The crowd roared as Tony hopped off his back, in stark contrast to his personal catchphrase “on yer bike”. Tony took his seat, not so quietly, explaining to his fellow table mates that the first person to be knocked by him, would be riding his trusted bike straight out of the casino.

Later in the tournament Tony busted Tom “Durrr” Dwan. Tony grabbed his bike and tried in vain to get Dwan to ride it out of the studio. He came back to the table and said, “He won’t ride the bike, he needs a trike.”

The bike may be just what Tony G has been looking for, as he survived the day, making the final table. Let’s hope the last person to ride the bike out of the casino is, Tony, along with the $1.2m first place prize.

We ended an eventful Saturday in Melbourne by taking several of our Palladium VIPs to the Rod Laver Arena for the Australian Open Tennis.

Players were treated to food and drink in a VIP Superbox, and what would turn out to be some not so exciting tennis matches.

In the first match Australian Lleyton Hewitt defeated Marcos Baghdatis in the second sent, when Baghdatis was forced to retire with an injury. The second match of the night saw Danish sensation Caroline Wozniacki defeat Shahar Peer of Israel 6-4, 4-0.

Sunday will see about 1/3 of our players hit the felt for the first of three starting days in the Aussie Millions Main Event. Yes, there is poker to be played here Down Under!
